NO STUDENT LEFT BEHIND
Our schools, teachers, and administrators have done incredible work throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite those heroic efforts, we know that many kids, their families, and teachers are fatigued and struggling.
A recent McKinsey report found that:
On average, American students from kindergarten to fifth grade have missed out on 20% of the reading and 33% of the math skills they would have learned in normal times
For students of color, those numbers go up to 23% for reading and 41% for math.
Catching up is going to take years and we need a plan to make sure that the needs of our students and teachers are being met so that no one is left behind. The federal support for our schools is slated to last through 2023 and we need a plan to enrich our students through and beyond traditional academics and classrooms. This will be a significant focus for me on the board of education.
